Sheldon Andelson: Moralist or Businessman?

Sheldon Adelson, a man who is best known for building large casino resorts, plans to persuade congress to place a ban upon all forms of Internet gambling. Adelson has claimed that that the practice is detrimental to society, and that it threatens the gambling industry’s traditional business model.

His campaign against online betting revolves around the idea that certain groups of people will not be able to resist the temptation to make large repeated bets online, and as a result they will be more prone to make decisions that could be extremely financially damaging.

He claims that the traditional industry requires the consumer to be present in the casino, and that this presence alone is all that is necessary to help one limit themselves. Adelson claims that making gambling accessible online puts certain people at risk, and that small children and those living in poverty will be easily exploited over the Internet.

The placement of a ban upon online gambling is expected to be one of the more heavily debated issues of 2014. Adelson has begun to hire a small army of lobbyist and other political action experts in order to attempt to push his will through Washington. By January 2014, he plans to form the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling. This is a group that plans to mobilize organizations against online gambling.

This is not the first time Adelson has politically opposed online gambling. He greatly assisted political candidate Newt Gingrich in the 2012 Political election. Gingrich actively spoke out against online gambling. Kentucky Legislative Ethics Commission online records also states that Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corporation reportedly lobbied against online gambling in Kentucky from 2008-2011.

Currently, only three States have legalized online betting. These states are Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. It is projected that next year, approximately a dozen more states will consider it.

Adelson’s motives are unclear at this time. Some believe that he is simply trying to reduce competition, but others argue that he has a vested moral interest in the issue. Many of his contemporary competitors such as Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts do not have a vested interest in the issue and believe that online gambling will not have a negative impact upon the gambling industry. Those working closely with Adelson have reported that they have not seen him this passionate about any issue in all of the years that they have worked with him.
